Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis
Since 1962, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis has offered leadership and support to thousands of youth ages 6 - 18. Through one-to-one interaction with trained adult staff, Club members learn to make positive decisions about their lives. They do better in school, stay away from drugs and gangs and begin to set personal goals for themselves, which ultimately them be responsible citizens of our community.

First Chance® Scholarship
Sponsored by Unversity of Phoenix and Boys & Girls Clubsof Greater Memphis
The First Chance® Scholarship Program was created in 2006 to promote the life-changing benefits of education, and honor individuals who have shown desire to improve their lives and the lives of those around them through education. The annual program will empower 200 individuals to complete an undergraduate or master’s degree through full-tuition scholarships to University of Phoenix. The University has partnered with non-profit organizations across the nation to help locate potential students that may not have an opportunity to attend college without the aid of a scholarship like First Chance®.
The University of Phoenix is pleased to partner with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis to offer a First Chance® Scholarship Program. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis provide programs and services that create a safe environment for the youth of the Greater Memphis area. Through these opportunities, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis promote education and character development.
University of Phoenix understands the importance of making higher education highly accessible for students of all ages and backgrounds. As the largest private university in North America, we take very seriously our social responsibility to our students and the communities we serve. University of Phoenix is particularly adept at aiding non-traditional students complete their education by designing programs around their busy lives.
Through this scholarship program, six (6) full-tuition scholarships will be offered. Each scholarship will allow a prospective student the opportunity to complete an undergraduate or master’s degree program at University of Phoenix. Recipients may choose to attend a University of Phoenix on-ground campus or may attend University of Phoenix online.
ELIGIBILTY CRITERIA
Applicants for the scholarship must demonstrate the following to be considered:
1. Applicants who reside in the United States must meet one of the following requirements: be a legal resident of the United States; have been granted permanent residency; have a valid visa that does not prohibit educational studies; have been granted temporary protected status along with approved Notice of Action issued by Citizen Immigration Services and verified through CIS Form g-845; or have been granted asylum along with the approved Notice of Action issued by the Citizen Immigration Services.
2. Applicants must be a resident of the Memphis or Shelby County area in Tennessee.
3. Applicants must be affiliated with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis (current member, alumni, or part-time staff).
4. Applicants must not be currently enrolled nor in the process of enrolling at any University of Phoenix campus or in any online program at any time prior to the scholarship award date. Applicants who enroll after submitting an application or before the scholarship award date are not eligible to be a recipient of this scholarship.
5. Applicants, once enrolled, must not receive a total of 100% tuition reimbursement from any source(s) including but not limited to: corporate reimbursement, other scholarships and/or private grants with the exception of Veteran’s Administration GI benefits or Veteran’s Administration Vocational Rehabilitation Benefits and Title IV financial aid funding.
6. Applicants must meet all admissions requirements of the University of Phoenix.
7. Applicants must not be an employee or family member of an employee of Apollo Group, Inc., University of Phoenix, Western International University, Institute for Professional Development or any other subsidiary of Apollo Group, Inc.
8. Applicants must submit a complete, signed application, together with all supporting documentation by the deadline date listed under the Selection Process section. The completion of the application form does not create an obligation to award a scholarship to applicant.
9. Applicants must submit a completed essay. High importance will be placed on the applicant’s desire to advance in their education, with an emphasis on furthering their careers, and their impact in the community in which they reside.
10. For Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis part-time staff only: applicants must be an alumnus of any Boys and Girls Club and now currently working as a part-time staff at one of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis and must have been previously or currently enrolled in a post-secondary education institute.
11. For Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis current members only: applicants must be a graduating senior expected to graduate in May 2010 or a high school graduate enrolled as a member of the Technical Training Center. Applicants must have been a member for at least two (2) years and must have a leadership role (e.g. Keystone Member, Job Ready, Job Seeker, etc.).
12. For Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis alumni only: applicants must be an alumnus of any Boys & Girls Clubs and must be an active member of the Alumni Association of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis chapter. Applicants must volunteer with a local club a minimum of forty-eight (48) hours (4 hours a month) each year while receiving the scholarship.
A completed application and supporting documentation must be received no later than August 6, 2010 to the Central Office of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis:
